By exam day, the sounds that cost points are sounds you have already chosen correctly a hundred times — under the same one-play pressure.
JLPT listening punishes a one-mora miss
A long vowel, doubled consonant, or single mora can separate two otherwise plausible choices. Later questions also test the speaker's next action, not a repeated keyword.

Scoring
